Biography: Sylvia Plath was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1932. She published her first poem when she eight-years-old, and ever since then she has loved poetry. She received a scholarship to Smith College in 1950. Her first published volume of poetry was published in 1960 and it was called The Colossus, this book was published when she was 28. Sylvia had a hard life her father died when she was eight, but during the summer of junior year in college she worked as a guest editor for the Mademoiselle Magazine, and had a near death experience. She wrote about this experience in her book The Bell Jar, that was published in 1963. Sylvia graduated from Smith College in 1955, recieving another scholarship to Cambridge in England. She married Ted Hughes in 1956.
